How can i dig through rubble and tiles to reach the soil in my garden?

My garden surface is random rubble and stones packed hard. I dug a small area with a shovel to see how deep the soil is, and after digging about 20cm i reached some tiles which are laid on top of the soil.

I need to hire a tool to make it easy for me to dig and loosen up all the rubble and tiles to expose the soil. What can i use?
Well, the clearance for garden entrance is just enough for my motorcycle to go through, which is 810mm in width. If i can find a digger which is less than that, i may be able to get it through... I'll give it a try.

What sort of access do you have to your garden – if I wanted to do that I would simply hire a mini-digger from my local hire shop.

They are around 750 – 1000 mm wide and have tracks each side so will pass down a reasonably flat footpath quite easily, a hydraulic arm with a ‘bucket’ on the end does the digging – like a JCB only much much smaller -you usually have a quick lesson on how to operate it yourself then off you go.

buy yourself a pick-ax and learn to use it. They come in several sizes. Wear eye protection and have some Absorbine Jr. or Icy Hot ready for the pain.

have a bucket or wheelbarrow to collect all the rubble. sounds like my property. an old house burned down, they just dug a new foundation and threw the dirt around on top of all the pavement and rubble.
