Do you avoid decorating and buying nice things for your den, because you feel its pointless?
I have always been a decorator and like to have my house gorgeously decorated, but I have noticed since having my son toddling around, that has gone out the window at least for the den. He puked on the couch last month after eating blackberries and tomato juice, so the couch is needless to say stained. Not to mention the time he took his diaper off and peed on the couch. We had to tear up the carpet and put down wood, move the plasma because he would run up and hit it which will ruin one of those TV's... Toys are everywhere, and all my decorations are what he considers his "toys" so I just quit fighting him on it, lol.
So that brings me to my question. Like I was saying before, we are going to get a new couch because we can't seem to get the stains out of ours, but it leaves me thinking why? lol, I mean why spent 00 on another couch just to have it stained again. I'm considering just keeping this one stains and all, and having company visit us in the living room. Do you have nice furniture? How do you keep it that way? Its not my lack of parenting, like I said its things like accidents that have stained my furniture and the reason we had to pull up the carpet. I don't let my kid just run rampant with food.
Den, lol my house is small and 100 yrs. old, so they built houses way different back then. Its about the size of a regular living room, but its the only really nice room that is for "company" lol
I stick my husband and son in the living room.

Yep. We were just about to get new carpeting and furniture when we acquired a grandchild in our household. Scratch that idea for a few more years.
Well after my son was born we got very good at keeping decorations up high. We tied all the heavy furniture to studs in the wall. I have multiple covers for all the upholstery actually. My couches are all treated with repellent and I keep Oxyclean for soaking the covers in the event of an "explosion" lol. All my covers match my scheme nicely and have worked in preserving my furniture. My MIL gave me the idea and it has turned out nicely. When I have formal company I just take off the covers and my upholstery looks brand new!
i’m amused that on here you have to have a disclaimer that it’s not your parenting.
anybody with a real-world child understands that these things can happen. we have what ought to be gorgeous sofas in our basement tv area and they are hopelessly stained. and my piano bench, which looked beautiful just a few years ago, has been part of too many rube goldberg experiments and forts and is hopelessly scratched up.
i figure in another five years we’ll fix things and hopefully be able to keep them nice. right now i’d rather have exuberance than perfection.
‘YES.I have children. If you come over unannounced there WILL be toys from one end of the house to the other, dishes in the sink and hell there might even be food crumbs on the floor! But we will be happy and that’s all that matters to us’
I think you should not waste money on new furniture if you think it is likely to get ruined again soon, Wait until your child is older and accidents are less likely to happen, Then you wont be as upset if your 3day old couch has stains all over it. Anyone visiting should not judge the condition of your furniture, If they do, They should not be worthy of visiting your home!!
i have six children ranging in ages from 3 year old twins to my oldest who is eleven, i used to be ike you loved to have a pretty home all nicely done up lovely carpet, spotless sofa, decorative orniments, ect the list goes on
i soon relised,
and i now have a wooden floor, leather sofa, all orniments are boxed and stored in loft, tv hangs on the wall, and i only paint, so i can wipe mucky hands marks off the wall, kids will be kids,
i am not the kind of parent who runs around sying dont touch this dont touch that as kids will touch and look and make a mess it’s in there very nature, being a parent is hard, no one should judge your den/sitting room, becose of a few little stains hear and there, just relax a little enjoy being a parent there will be plenty time for having a nice home when your child is grown
